Southern Cali

"You don't have to be rich to travel well." ~Eugene Fodor

That means take advantage of every opportunity to travel. Even if it means playing third wheel on your sister and her boyfriend's short gastronomy trip.

I arrived three hours before them, so I headed into Old Town San Diego for lunch. I had an amazing mango margarita and delicious carne asada at Casa Guadalajara. I should have returned there for another margarita instead of grabbing one at Casa De Reyes. Opted to sit at the bar while I waited for my party to arrive and ended up paying double the price for a drink that wasn't nearly as good.

They were there for the food, and once you experience the Asian cuisine of southern California, you'll understand why. It's as authentic as you're going to get, packed with flavors you won't forget. We drove out to Long Beach and slowly made our way back down, breaking up our gluttonous day with strolls through Huntington Beach and La Jolla Cove.

When you're close to a National Park, you go! We spent a day at Joshua Tree, driving through from one entrance to the another, with a quick hike up Ryan Mountain.

Roundtrip airfare: $286
Uber to Old Town San Diego: $15.98
My sister paid with points for hotel and car.
Total trip cost: $302 plus cost of food.
